From Contractor to Senior Business Leader
Sixteen years ago Mabel walked through Visa’s doors as a contractor, covering for a worker on maternity leave. Today, she’s a Senior Business Leader of Compliance.
“As the end of my temporary assignment neared, I applied for a manager position,” she recalls. “With my diverse background and my recently acquired Visa experience, it was easy to transition to another department. Within five years I became a Director and three years later Senior Business Leader.”
Even after 16 years and various roles, Mabel still gets excited each time she’s able to make a contribution. “Though I’m not directly involved in technology, I am part of the backbone that supports Visa. My job is to provide support to the front-line people — that makes me feel good about what I do.”
“Being a part of Visa has been exceptional in terms of both the work and the benefits, especially the support networks they provide,” Mabel notes. For her, it’s about the big things, such as healthcare coverage and retirement plans, and the not-so-big things, such as Visa making it easier to find good child care. She also participates in VIBE (Visa Black Employee Association) and Women in Leadership, groups that allow her to network, share knowledge and learn about other cultures.
She also points to solid management as another reason she loves working at Visa. “I’ve been lucky. I’ve received strong guidance from some great managers, and I think who you work for is important. Sure, you can always ask people to meet their goals, but when they like what they’re doing and who they’re working for they’ll work hard to exceed expectations.”
Mabel is still amazed at how small Visa is given what it achieves as a company. “When you think about how much influence Visa has on the global economy, it’s hard to believe that we don’t have 100,000 employees. It’s a real testament to the talent that’s here, seeing the worldwide impact of just 7,500 individuals.”
